In Intervention, Dan described how he evaluates adults and suggests course corrections to improve the basics.
He followed that with Can You Go?, where he addressed assessments trainers and coaches might use with their clients and athletes.
Now, in Now What? Dan loops back around to tell us what to do next. You’ve brought your clients up to the minimum standards. You’ve done your assessments. Now what?
That’s the question Dan answers in this book, the third installment of this series.
Dan John’s Now What? will help you determine the next steps in moving toward the goals of your clients and athletes.
“In Now What? Dan presents basic tools and training principles from his experiences as an athlete and coach, and applies them with experienced hands and through empathetic eyes toward the personal growth of his readers. It’s a reasonable approach to help us all reach our goals, bringing greater satisfaction while working through the process.” ~ Chip Morton
From Dan’s Introduction to Now What?
The lessons learned about the road to success from elite athletes and performers can make everyone’s life better. From de-cluttering the inbox or letter pile with a shark habit, to applying pirate maps to ongoing health and fitness, most people can free up some mental space to focus on moving ahead with all of life’s goals and dreams.
Elite performers focus on the fundamentals and basics more thoroughly than the hobbyist. Elite performers keep their heads clear, carving out the clutter of life—both the important and the unimportant—with a scalpel. When needed, the elite focus on two- to twelve-week programs to shore up a weakness or some other issue. Elite performance is principle based.
Most of us can learn from this “carving of the clutter.” At times, we can follow a program, but most of the time, we can adopt a simple list of pirate maps for our fitness, health and longevity needs and goals.
The stumbling block of Now what? soon takes on a new meaning. After emptying the inbox and finishing the laundry, we can ask Now what? as the start of a new adventure, a new challenge.
In this book, I outline a simple quadrant showing how I teach elite performers the tools to deal with life, living and high-end achievement. And if you don’t think you’re an elite performer, I would like you to reconsider this. ~ Dan John
Now What? The Ongoing Pursuit of Improved Performance eBook Dan John Chip Morton
Dan's writing style is very comfortable. It's like he's sitting across a table having a conversation with you, generously bestowing his wisdom. This book is VERY good. I've read it once, and listened to it's audio version twice while on a road trip. The book starts the conversation and thought process for the question Now What? Everyone has been at this point in there life, whether after a successful participation in a National Championship, wedding, divorce, bankruptcy, or even a 90 day workout program that promises to get you shredded through muscle confusion.... where they are sitting there saying to themselves Now What? His insight into how to plan for success through the use of habit forming and mapping is a great concept that can be put to use immediately, for anyone. His in-depth discussion on the psyche of an athlete can also carry over into everyday life. Of course, his training advice is spot on as always.
Overall, I have to say Dan John's writing always carries the tone of honesty, integrity, humor, originality and strong principle. This book is definitely worth a read!

Now What? The Ongoing Pursuit of Improved Performance eBook Dan John Chip Morton Reviews
Another awesome volume to add to the library!
Any book written by this man is worth the time to read.
It’s been said that Dan John is the most quoted author, and professional speakers in all the health and strength field. There’s no doubt he is one of the country’s preeminent authorities of practical, real world, strength and fitness coaching. We can count with the fingers of one hand—maybe two if we’re generous— the number authors and speakers that share his rare air.
His latest book, Now What? The Ongoing pursuit of Improved Performance delivers 100% and adds to his growing canon of significant works. By page 12 I’d already gotten my money’s worth. I was once again hooked when he writes, “I can always tell when an athlete is well coached. Their technique seems to save energy. Their approach is simple. The execution seems flawless. There isn’t a lot of wasted energy”. Read that over and over, write it on a 3x5 card, and memorize it, as I have. This is among the best advice I’ve ever read. Applies to all athletic skills for sure, but just as much to waitressing, running a business or doing brain surgery. It’s brilliant and universally applicable to most every endeavor in life. By page 289 he reminds us, “When most people try to learn a new skill, they think too damn much”. Read the entire book and you’ll better understand how to coach and be coached, and what makes Dan John so great.
Dan John is “The Thinker”. Sitting atop a corner of a desk in my office is a replica of Rodin’s sculpture The Thinker. That’s Dan John! Both are physically imposing and—you guessed it— thinking. Dan draws on decades of experience as a national and world-caliber athlete and coach, and a healthy dose of trial and error mixed with a broad range of reading that extends into literature, religion and philosophy. Add his vast sphere of expert friends and authorities that include OTPbooks publishing, and we have a mastermind of knowledge encapsulated for every blessed reader. Dan shares learned principles and methods that are fun to read and usable in our training programs from the get go.
Building from his other books, Never Let Go—which remains my favorite, as it reinspired me as I “matured” into my forties to never let go of my hunger to lift and have worthy goals Dan illustrates how progress of some kind is always attainable. Last year’s publication of Before We Go encouraged me to embrace loaded carries, including farmers carries. Over the five months leading up to my fiftieth birthday, I trained and achieved a double bodyweight farmer’s carry. doesn’t like links on their reviews but you can Google video search “Derek Freund farmer’s carry” and see what a regular guy father of three, husband, business owner… with all variety of responsibilities can do when he follows Dan’s advice.
In Now What? The Ongoing Pursuit of Improved Performance you’ll be reminded of Dan’s trademark irrefutable truisms that most every fitness program will work for the first six weeks, then you must make a decision. Dan helps you achieve success with a no-nonsense dedicated approach. When designing a fitness program there are only five things you can do push, pull, squat, hinge, and weighted carries. Don’t overdo or neglect any of these. Strengthen a weakness and most likely everything else will improve. Then he takes us, once again further, with chapters on, “shark habits”, “plans programs and peaking”, “assessing principles by accessing performance, “tension, arousal and relaxation, and much, much more.
If you’re sincerely interested in achieving a lifetime of physical and mental conditioning; being a lifelong learner read Now What? and Dan’s other books, share them with your friends and training partners, and join us in our epic journey through all things heavy.
Stay hungry, my friends.
Another great book by Dan with some new motivational and performance information. As an old discus and hammer thrower I just love his story. And he convinces me to stretch and train appropriately.
Dan John does such a fantastic job writing about leadership and coaching. I used many of the thoughts and concepts for my personal and professional life that are non sports related.
Any book by Dan John is motivating - I'm neither an athlete, just someone who wanted to get into shape and now fine tune it. Great reading and great guidance
"Now What?" is the perfect continuation of Dan John's series of books detailing his coaching and training methodology. Dan shares his insights and knowledge across the athlete/client spectrum from the "fat-loss client" to the high school athlete all the way to elite athletes in professional sports. Throughout the book Dan John chronicles his paths for those "Now What" questions we run into as coaches and for those training. Aside from coaching and training, I think readers will be surprised how much fantastic life advice they will take away from this book.
Also I would highly recommend purchasing the audio version (listened to it then went back through the kindle version to highlight) in addition to the kindle or book version. Dan is an outstanding speaker, the book is even more powerful coming right from his voice.
Personally I bought all three versions. No matter where you are in the fitness/training world, do yourself a favor and read this.
